Completely Free Domain Names

Want a domain name for your web site without paying a yearly registration fee? Having a top-level domain name makes your site's URL easier to remember, and it will be taken more seriously. It also enables you to receive email sent to the domain name. Read on to learn about some types of these names which can be obtained completely free of charge...

.TK: The domain name of Tokelau, a small Pacific island, is freely available. As an example, you could register the name www.yourname.tk completely free. E-mail messages sent to the .TK addresses can be forwarded to another e-mail account. It has a feature for automatically creating a short URL for the promotion of an online auction, as well as a built-in targeted link exchange advertising system called "TiKinet." For a small fee, additional features such as the elimination of Dot.TK advertising, DNS service, and legal domain ownership are included.

.CO.CC: This is another, slightly longer, type of domain name which is offered for free. The registration service is based in South Korea. Features include detailed statistics about hits to your web site, DNS service, and free search engine submission, as well as a categorized directory of registered domains. The registration form is somewhat longer than that of Dot.TK. It doesn't appear to display any advertising when the domain names are accessed; they accept donations via PayPal. CO.CC offers a message board and contact information in the "Help Center" section of their web site.

.CO.NR: Domain names of this type can be registered for free at freedomain.co.nr. Most names can be obtained instantly if they are still available, but approval is required to register some of the shorter and/or more important names ("VIP Domains", such as email.co.nr). Their web site indicates that domain names which are inactive for a long period of time will be removed. It is completely free of advertising, but requires a link back to freedomain.co.nr. Their "Latest News" section provides information on system maintenance (which can temporarily prevent new registrations) and other changes.

If these completely free domain names aren't desirable for you, try searching for domain name auctions on eBay with minimum bid amounts of less than a dollar. Make sure there aren't any additional fees or obligations mentioned in the listings. It is not uncommon for low-value .com, .org, and .info names to sell for less than ten cents on eBay; although not completely free, this isn't far from it.
